The First Anniversary of His Accession to the Throne — 1954

“The Qur’an is our constitution, and the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is our foundation. Upon these principles we proceed, and upon this constitution we remain steadfast, by God’s will and power.”

“Since ascending the throne, we resolved to adopt a policy within the country that guarantees the welfare of the people and elevates their condition in all aspects of life.”

“We set before our eyes the eradication of poverty, disease, and ignorance; the implementation of the noble Sharia upon all members of the nation equally; and the establishment of a strong army that protects us from aggression and secures peace and stability.”

“Among the blessings of God — for which we thank Him — is that the country enjoys a praiseworthy state of prosperity, a remarkable renaissance in construction and development, steady growth in trade, abundant employment, and increasing wealth. All of this is crowned by comprehensive stability and complete security that has become proverbial — and this is by God’s grace and kindness.”

“This would not have been achieved had we not made adherence to the true religion and fulfillment of its duties the foremost of our actions, and had we not devoted ourselves to serving the country, preparing the means for its advancement, and striving to remove every obstacle, no matter how great — relying upon God alone, for He is the best Protector and the best Supporter.”

Foreign Policy

“Our foreign policy is founded upon peaceful relations with all nations, cooperation in establishing justice, resisting oppression, and preserving mutual interests with fairness. Whoever treats us with goodwill, we treat with goodwill; we honor their rights and uphold sincere friendship in public and private.”

“Our policy is one of peace and sincerity. But whoever meets our peace with aggression, or our friendship with hostility, we rely upon God to defend our rights and repel their injustice with the strength He has granted us — and He is the best of supporters.”

“We maintain international relations that we respect, and we are bound to the Arab League by obligations that must be fulfilled, no matter the sacrifice. The Charter of the United Nations requires respect for the independence and freedom of nations, and the Charter of the Arab League obliges us to cooperate in repelling injustice and resisting aggression, as well as supporting Arab peoples still under colonial rule in their struggle for freedom and independence.”

“In light of these duties — toward the world and toward our Arab brethren — we must exert all our ability to support the Arab peoples defending their independence and striving for liberation.”

On Colonialism and Lessons from History

“We call upon colonial powers — who, like us, are bound by the principles of the United Nations — to take heed of recent history. Nations whose leaders acted with wisdom, such as India and Java, granted independence peacefully, without bloodshed or loss, and replaced hostility with treaties of friendship and mutual benefit.”

“But those who chose another path — as in Indochina — left only sorrow, bloodshed, and destruction, though the outcome was the same: the triumph of freedom and the end of colonialism.”

The Palestinian Cause

“The Arab peoples suffer a deep and grievous wound — a matter of religion, honor, and survival. The Zionists, in a moment of historical darkness, obtained the infamous Balfour Declaration, and through influence in British and American politics turned it into the so‑called State of Israel.”

“They became like a cancer in the body of the Arab world — spreading poison, destroying homes, expelling nearly a million Arab Muslims from Palestine, seizing their lands and property, and leaving them scattered, hungry, and ill, a symbol of misery across the world.”

“We cannot comprehend how anyone fails to see the clear injustice inflicted upon the Arabs of Palestine.”

“We ask the world to imagine — even for a moment — that what happened to us had happened to a part of Britain or America. The world would have risen in outrage to defend justice and repel oppression.”

“Those who created this deadly affliction in the Arab world must acknowledge their wrongdoing and remedy it with decisive and just solutions — not with futile attempts to impose peace between Arabs and Zionists. No Arab with a drop of Arab blood will ever accept such a peace at the expense of his people — and it shall never happen, God willing.”

A Call for Arab Unity

“In the face of this catastrophe — and others past or yet to come — we must admit our shortcomings. We have been divided, distracted by trivial disputes, placing individuals above the nation, until we became an example of fragmentation.”

“Had we united upon one purpose and one heart, we would not have lost Palestine, nor would colonial powers have dared to belittle us.”

“To our Arab brothers everywhere, we extend our call; and to Muslims across the world, we send our appeal — for sincere cooperation and comprehensive solidarity that restores rights, repels injustice, and makes us a force for truth, peace, and security.”

Conclusion

“This is our internal and external policy — clear and sincere. We hope that our Arab brothers, and all fair‑minded people, will support us in it, for we believe it brings justice, stability, and peace to this part of the world.”
