The Origin of President Gamal Abdel Nasser

During his reign, King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the King of Saudi Arabia at the time, traveled to the Arab Republic of Egypt to attend one of the conferences. Accompanying him was Sheikh Saleh Al‑‘Irq (from Al‑Hadi bin Zayed of the Al‑Ghafran branch of the Al‑Murrah tribe).

On the sidelines of the conference, King Saud sat with President Gamal Abdel Nasser—the chairman of the conference and President of the Republic. The two leaders held a friendly conversation. King Saud greatly admired Abdel Nasser for his intelligence, political skill, and rise to power from being an army officer. At that time, Abdel Nasser was a widely celebrated Arab nationalist leader.

King Saud asked him:
“Which of Egypt’s tribes do you come from?”

Abdel Nasser replied:
“My origins are from your land, from the Arabian Peninsula.”

The King asked:
“How so?”

Abdel Nasser said:
“I am from the Al‑Murrah tribe.”

The King, surprised and knowledgeable about the branches of the Al‑Murrah tribe, asked:
“Which branch of Al‑Murrah?”

Abdel Nasser replied:
“I am from Al‑Najm.”

The King was astonished, as he knew little about Al‑Najm due to their very small number.

After the conference, as King Saud’s plane departed back to Saudi Arabia, he asked Saleh Al‑‘Irq about Al‑Najm. Saleh explained who they were and told him that they belonged to Al‑Jarabi‘ah, one of the clans of the Al‑Murrah tribe.
