A humanitarian stance toward animals

A beautiful act of kindness from a beloved man known for his great generosity and compassion—may God forgive him, our parents, and all deceased Muslims.

I recall a story told to me among many stories narrated by men who accompanied him. One of the men who visited us from the State of Kuwait—himself a resident of Kuwait, and I do not know whether he is still alive or not, from the Harb tribe—told me that a man named Rashid al‑Qufaidi, one of the khawiya (royal guards) who served King Saud, may God have mercy on him, narrated this incident about the “King of Humanity,” may God’s mercy be upon him.

They were on a hunting trip in the north of the Kingdom. As the king’s convoy passed by a Bedouin encampment, they noticed that the Bedouins had left behind their female dog, struggling between life and death with her puppies. The king was deeply moved by the sight—by her condition and that of her young—and he prayed for them. He then ordered that she be given some of the game they had hunted. One of the khawiya went down and carried out the king’s instructions.

Later, when they settled for the evening in a place the king wished to stop, and after they had prepared their dinner, the king ordered that the leftovers of their meal be sent to the dog as well. He had not forgotten her, so great was the compassion in his heart. The khawiya were hesitant because of the distance, the darkness, and the difficulty of finding their way back to her location—but the king insisted, and so they went.

This story was narrated by trustworthy men, in gatherings of wise elders who lived through that era. May God have mercy on a believing heart that was moved by the suffering of an animal with such profound compassion.
