King Saud’s Protest to the United States and Britain — 1954

King Saud, known for his deep commitment to Arab and Muslim causes, expressed strong displeasure at the decision of the United States and Britain to present their ambassadors’ credentials in Jerusalem rather than Tel Aviv. His Majesty called upon the Arab states not only to protest this grave action but also to adopt a firm and positive stance in accordance with the higher interests of the Arab nation.

Official Statement

The following is the official statement broadcast by Abdullah Ibrahim Al‑Fadl, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia:

“His Majesty King Saud has shown the utmost concern regarding the presentation of the credentials of the American and British ambassadors in Jerusalem instead of Tel Aviv—contrary to established practice and in violation of United Nations resolutions, as well as the previous commitments of both governments, which had declared that if the Israeli government moved to Jerusalem, they would not recognize such a move.”

“His Majesty therefore believes that Arab governments must submit strong protests against this blatant breach of United Nations resolutions and the clear disregard of previous commitments. This action gravely harms Arab rights. His Majesty further believes that the Arabs will not stop at protest alone, and that they will take whatever measures the general interest requires.”

His Majesty also took the opportunity of the visit of the British Assistant Minister for Middle Eastern Affairs to Riyadh to discuss the matter directly, conveying the deep concern of the Kingdom and emphasizing that this step represents a dangerous shift that the Arabs cannot ignore. He stressed that such an action does not reflect the friendship that both governments claim to uphold toward the Arabs.

His Majesty urged all Arab states to take concrete action in response to this violation of Arab rights and disregard for Arab dignity.
