Eighth Anniversary of the Founding of the Arab League — 1953

A request was presented to His Majesty at his palace in al‑Nasiriyyah in Riyadh, asking him to grant a statement to al‑Yawm newspaper in Beirut on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the establishment of the Arab League — an anniversary celebrated throughout the Arab world. His Majesty dictated the following message:

“The Arab League was a sincere response by the Arab peoples to their shared sentiment toward the highest goal sought by every Arab who is loyal to his noble Arab homeland — the goal of Arab unity. It is a unity we strive for and work toward, extending our hands with sincerity and truthfulness to every believer in it, every struggler for its sake, and every caller to it.”

“Today, the Arab League is the embodied idea in which the feelings of every Arab — wherever he may be — converge. Arab governments joined their peoples in embracing it, and their word was united upon it. It has become a sacred symbol toward which we must all direct ourselves, around which we must rally, and upon which we must cooperate.”

“For all these reasons, I take this opportunity — the eighth anniversary of its founding — to salute the League, and to salute within it our cherished hope, our intended purpose, and our shared aspirations that unite the hearts of Arabs across their vast world.”

“I call upon my Arab brothers everywhere to contribute to strengthening its idea, spreading its message, and remaining sincere to the lofty purpose it represents — a purpose for which the League, in its present form, is but a prelude and a means.”

“I call upon all of them to this noble endeavor, and I ask Almighty God to grant success to those who lead it, those who work for it, those who call to its principles, and those who believe in its mission — so that it may achieve the glory, honor, and renaissance of the Arab nation.”
