King Saud’s Position During the 1956 Crisis

In the aftermath of World War II, the Middle East faced serious challenges that brought Egypt and Saudi Arabia closer together. This rapprochement reached its most vivid expression during the crisis Egypt confronted in 1956 and the aggression launched against it. It would be illogical to attribute the failure of that aggression solely to Egypt, for in reality it resulted from international circumstances shaped by the dynamics of the Cold War.

Within this context, our study proposes the hypothesis that Saudi Arabia played a significant role—directly or indirectly—in influencing the direction of U.S. policy regarding the crisis.
