His Majesty King Saud’s Journey to Abyssinia — 1957

During the summer of 1957, the heat intensified to an exceptional degree. His Majesty King Saud therefore traveled to the city of Asmara in Abyssinia, located across the Red Sea, known for its pleasant and moderate climate. He arrived on the morning of Friday, 21 Dhul‑Hijjah 1376 AH (July 1957), seeking rest and recuperation.

The Negus of Ethiopia insisted that the visit be treated as an official one. By his order, the gates of the royal palace were opened for the King’s stay, and the Governor‑General of the Eritrean province received His Majesty on behalf of the Emperor. Popular organizations and civic groups extended extraordinary hospitality in his honor.

His Majesty then proceeded to Addis Ababa, the capital, in response to an invitation from the Emperor, arriving there on the 23rd of the same month.

Talks were held between the two monarchs, resulting in agreements to strengthen economic and commercial relations and to exchange diplomatic representation at the level of embassies. They also discussed political issues of concern to the Middle East and agreed to coordinate their policies and positions on many matters of mutual interest.

On Saturday morning, 10 Rajab 1379 AH, the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, arrived in Riyadh in response to an official invitation from King Saud.

Further discussions between the two sovereigns demonstrated their shared commitment to the principles of peace and friendly cooperation. These understandings were recorded in the joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the visit.
