Statement of the Tripartite Military Pact

The General Directorate of Broadcasting, Press, and Publication in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued the following joint statement:

“On the 10th and 11th of Ramadan 1375 AH, corresponding to the 20th and 21st of April 1956, His Majesty Imam Ahmad, King of the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen; President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Head of the Egyptian Government; and His Majesty King Saud I, King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, met in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

During these two days, several meetings were held in which matters of particular concern to the three states were discussed, as well as issues related to the establishment of security and peace in the Arab world in general.

The discussions and consultations among the three leaders took place in an atmosphere of sincere goodwill and complete solidarity. All were keen to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and cooperation among their countries, aiming to fulfill the aspirations of the Arab peoples for freedom, dignity, security, and peace.

The meetings resulted in the conclusion of a tripartite joint defense agreement, signed by the three leaders. The meetings also provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views on major plans to strengthen economic, cultural, and technical ties among the three states and to reinforce cooperation among them for the good and prosperity of the Arab nation.

Radio Mecca commented on 11 Ramadan 1375 AH (21 April 1956) on the signing of the tripartite pact between Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Yemen, saying:

“Today marks a new victory for the Arabs and for the Arab cause. A new tripartite agreement has been signed in a fraternal and friendly atmosphere, aiming to unify the Arab voice, elevate their standing, and repel aggression from their lands and territories. At exactly five o’clock in the morning, His Majesty King Saud, His Majesty Imam Ahmad, and President Gamal Abdel Nasser met at the Royal Palace in Jeddah in preparation for signing this distinguished agreement.”

King Saud opened the meeting with a brief statement:

“I believe you all share with me the joy of this happy opportunity that has allowed us to meet. Our dearest hope in this life is to strive for what benefits the Arabs and Islam, and to work toward solidarity so that we may stand as one for the sake of the Arab cause.
As your brother, I welcome you to your country with the warmest greetings, and I pray to Almighty God to grant us all success in what serves the interests of the Arabs and Islam.”

President Gamal Abdel Nasser responded:

“I thank Your Majesty for providing this opportunity to meet with you and with His Majesty Imam Ahmad. We pray that God grants us success in achieving the goals we seek.”

His Majesty Imam Ahmad affirmed this sincere prayer, saying:

“By God’s permission, our hopes will be fulfilled, God willing.”

After this, the agreement was signed in an atmosphere overflowing with brotherhood in God and devotion to the unity of the Arab homeland.

It was deemed appropriate that this agreement encompass the earlier bilateral military agreement concluded between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, replacing it with this tripartite agreement rather than concluding additional bilateral agreements between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and between Yemen and Egypt.

The three leaders then congratulated one another, pledging solidarity in the service of the Arab cause.
