Interview with Al‑Akhbar Newspaper (1954)

King Saud Speaks to Al‑Akhbar:

“The Zionist danger is like cancer — its only cure is removal”
Solidarity and sacrifice are the path to Arab unity

Khalil Taher, Al‑Akhbar’s Arab Affairs editor, writes:

I had the honor of meeting His Majesty King Saud, King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, at the Cairo Palace yesterday. His Majesty welcomed me warmly, and I remained in his presence for quite some time.

His Majesty spoke about the issues of the Arab world in general, and Palestine in particular. He began by highlighting the relations between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, saying:

“My tongue speaks gratitude to dear Egypt — its government and its people — for the affection, brotherhood, and cooperation I have witnessed between two nations bound by ties of blood, language, and religion. They aim for one goal: unifying the Arab word and supporting Arab interests within the framework of the Arab League Charter and the Joint Defense Pact. They work together to revive civilization and freedom in this Arab East, which has played a great role in the civilization of the world.”

His Majesty also praised every effort that unites Muslims and strengthens their ranks.

Relations with Arab States

His Majesty spoke about his country’s relations with other Arab states, saying:

“There is no disagreement between us and any of our sister Arab states. We are a nation that respects its covenants and treaties. But it must also be known that we spare no effort in preserving their independence and their standing among the nations.”

The Path to Arab Unity

His Majesty then turned to the subject of Arab unity, affirming:

“The only path to achieving it is solidarity among Arabs — solidarity guided by sincerity, frankness, generosity, and sacrifice.”

Restoring Palestine to Its People

Speaking about the Palestinian issue, His Majesty said:

“We Arabs are a nation of fifty million people, possessing resources, spiritual values, wealth, and men — all of which qualify us to take our rightful place among nations and secure freedom and independence for the Arabs.
We bear no enmity toward the Jews if they abandon the lands they have seized and return Palestine to its rightful owners.
But we will not tolerate their remaining there.
The Zionist danger is like cancer — its only cure is removal.
It is our duty to work earnestly, frankly, and sincerely to restore the usurped homeland from its occupiers.”

We Will Spare Neither the Precious Nor the Cheap

In conclusion, His Majesty said:

“I affirm that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not hesitate to sacrifice all that is precious and all that is humble in order to fulfill the aspirations and freedom of the Arab peoples.”
